Pilates
Pilates is a body-conditioning method that targets deep postural muscles, often referred to as 'core' muscles. It will improve your posture, muscle tone and strength, and flexibility.
Pilates is ideal for people from all walks of life; from athletes to first time exercisers. It is recommended by medical specialists for those with back problems. Because of the unique way Pilates works it is possible to adjust many exercises to suit the needs of people with physical restrictions. All my classes are multilevel so you can set your own pace and work at a level appropriate to how you feel on the day. Pilates can be used as rehabilitation from injury or just as recreational fitness. Every session provides a whole-body workout.
Pilates offers both mental and physical training, teaching you to be in control of your body. By improving body awareness, tension is released from the body and improved postural alignment is achieved. Precise flowing movements mean that muscle and ligament damage, sometimes associated with other fitness regimes, are avoided.
I incorporate additional gentle but effective movements that assist with realignment, mobility and function. These are adapted from or added to classical Pilates postures.
When you attend one of my classes, it’s more than just exercise. My classes are functional, fun, motivational and educational.
Exercises are performed laying on your back, front, side, on hands and knees and in standing. Alternative postures and props can be provided for any that may cause difficulty to allow full participation. A sanitised body mat is supplied. Classes are a maximum of 13 people to ensure adequate supervision. Classes generally run in six-week blocks costing £54. I do offer a trial session for £10 if you are unsure and want to ‘try before you buy’.
You will be asked to complete a health form to highlight any physical needs and have exercises adapted to your needs as appropriate. Please contact me for a form.
You should view the block as you would a college course; you effectively buy the block. If you cannot attend your class it cannot be credited. Instead, I offer ‘catch up’. This means that you can attend another class elsewhere when someone is absent. Few teachers offer catch up and some charge a membership fee on top of the course or insist on a private lesson first, I never have or will.
You may wish to attend a one–to–one session prior to joining a matwork class or use it to focus on specific areas of your body to strengthen or mobilise. All Private lessons are bespoke based on your requirements, goals and abilities. It is one hour of my undivided attention, tuition, expertise and encouragement. Private lessons cost £40 for one hour and are conducted at Downend Assembly Hall on a Wednesday lunchtime and some weekends at my house in Kingswood.

Bowen Technique
Bowen Practitioners make gentle non-invasive moves across particular areas of muscles, ligaments tendons and connective tissue triggering nerve endings involved with tension of muscles which hold us in correct alignment.
Issues Bowen Technique can help

When dysfunction occurs in the body due to injury, illness, emotional trauma, chronic pain or stress, physical symptoms manifest. This may be pain, stiffness, discomfort, mood change, fatigue, insomnia, headache, respiratory or digestive issues. Bowen therapy appears to connect the brain to the area of the problem and allows an assessment of the tension in a specific muscle and surrounding tissue. Bowen Technique can be effective in facilitating the release of undue tension in the muscles and connective tissue helping the body to realign and restore balance.
Many people find Bowen relaxing which helps promote the body’s natural self-healing process.
Crucially, I will usually leave the room regularly to give the body short periods of rest, this allows the body to respond and adjust.
A Bowen treatment including consultation can take 45-60 minutes. Work can be performed against skin or through light clothing. It is advisable to expect to attend two to three consecutive treatments with a seven-day break to achieve best results. It is recommended other treatments like massage, chiropractic, etc, are not mixed with Bowen.

Massage
Performed using base oil or massage wax against skin, this type of massage is to address musculoskeletal dysfunction. It is outcome focussed, meaning it will effectively treat problems such as joint restriction/stiffness, back/joint pain, general chronic pain, injury repair, drainage of joint oedema/swelling. Following intense study, I now incorporate vagus nerve and lymphatic stimulation into this treatment where appropriate.
It is corrective, restorative and comfortable. Deep tissue techniques I use do not involve pressing elbows into tender areas to ‘relieve tension’ or applying more pressure. I lift, roll and manipulate soft tissue, this may cause some discomfort over areas that are sore or tender, but this is generally described as ‘good pain’ and eases quickly and the relief gained outweighs the discomfort. Remedial massage is great for restoring joint mobility and improving function throughout the body.
This massage can be combined with Muscle Energy Techniques for greater outcomes when treating chronic conditions such as frozen shoulder.
When treating post-injury/surgery repair I can apply Kinesiolgy Taping to support the joint and assist with mobilisation. KT is very effective on ankle and shoulder injuries where fear of pain causes lack of confidence to move the joint, leading to increased stiffness and loss of function/more pain.
All remedial treatments aim to create or promote improvement in the targeted and surrounding areas being treated.

Kinesiology Taping
KT is normally applied at the conclusion of a soft tissue technique such as remedial massage or MET. Among its many uses it mostly used to treat joint pain and strain, and low back pain.
Injury or trauma to the body triggers inflammation as a protective response; pain, swelling, head and/or redness, and limited mobility. Correct application (which is why you shouldn’t try this at home!) helps to alleviate trauma symptoms and can promote the natural healing response in the body. KT, due to its elasticity in nature, when applied specifically can also support gentle mobilisation as it is not restrictive like athlete taping.
This can be very useful when trying to mobilise following a broken ankle/hip for example when confidence has been affected and fear prevents adequate weight-bearing on the ankles. KT is a specialist skill due to the need to know how to apply the tension from the taping onto the affected area.
Usually applied after remedial massage for a small additional fee

Muscle Energy Technique
METs are used in the osteopathic field to manipulate, diagnose and treat a specific area or problem, such as frozen shoulder or tennis/golfer’s elbow.
From a precisely controlled position the client exerts effort while the therapist acts as counterforce. This results in contraction and relaxation of muscles which in turn enables gentle mobilisation.

Hypnotherapy / Psychotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses hypnosis to assist you to action positive behavioural changes.
I practice Solution Focussed Brief Therapy. That means, in essence, that I will guide you towards the solutions of your problems you already have but are unaware of. I often refer to myself as an emotional sat-nav. I specialise in anxiety and depression, habit, and phobia. I also offer quit smoking hypnosis.
Hypnosis is a gentle state of focused awareness, akin to daydreaming. And because we daydream – or self-hypnotise ourselves daily – it’s a safe state for us to be in.
There is no mind control – the most popular myth – in hypnosis, you retain control throughout. My role is to guide your subconscious to a deepened relaxed state and help you find the answers to your problems as quickly and effectively as possible. It is one of the most pleasant therapeutic experiences you will ever have.
If you are wary of hypnosis or simply prefer the talking part of solving your problems, I will conduct psychotherapy with you instead.
